growing community through photography
October 27th, 2008 by Vienna Posted in community, rad'a
This weekend, rad’a hosted an art opening for an In Focus event, “Femmes dans la Mire.” The event is the third in a series of international exhibits originating in Tanzania. On a rainy Saturday night, rad’a drew a large crowd of friends, family and supporters of the refugee and immigrant women who discovered photography this year.
Over the summer of 2008, a group of refugee and immigrant women in Montreal were given the opportunity to learn film and digital photography as a way to share their experiences and connect with other women in their new community. The exhibition included their photographs and stories, and featured work by Agnes Das (India), Mariana Montoyo Garro (Colombia), Elaine Quinoz (Colombia), Avalon Powell (South Africa), Nitha Karanja (Kenya), Gloria Vega (Mexico) and Doris Suntaxi (Ecuador). The evening also included a jazz quartet who kept the upbeat mood going despite the gloomy rain outside. Thanks to Maia Rotman for her devotion to making this project possible and to everyone who came out to support this unique event!
