a yoga routine just for sarah palin!

October 15th, 2008 by roseanne Posted in yoga in the media

I wasn’t checking my blog or news feeds over the holiday weekend, but when I plugged back in today, I saw the yoga blogosphere was ablaze with discussion about a new yoga video for Sarah Palin. The Huffington Post columnist and “coolest yoga instructor ever,” Tara Stiles, created a yoga routine specifically with the Republican VP candidate (and other mavericks) in mind.

It’s refreshing to see witty political commentary from the yoga community as we head towards the American election. Tara Stiles writes about health, wellness and politics for The Huffington Post and has created numerous videos to bring yoga to the masses. Check out her hilarious routine for us regular folks who are stressed and anxious about the current financial crisis.

The Lululemon seaweed controversy continues to make the news this week, and is garnering a lot of attention in the yoga community. ascent contributor Eileen Delehanty Pearkes expressed her perspective on the situation on our blog earlier this week, and her eloquent commentary was sought out by a Canadian Press journalist. If you’ve been following the cOMmunity blog over the last several weeks, you’ll have already heard that one of ascent’s regular contributors, Eileen Delehanty Pearkes, has released a new book called The Glass Seed (timeless books).

There’s a lovely article about Eileen and her new book in the Montreal Gazette today, in the Arts & Life section. To read it online, just click here.

For those of you who are in the Montreal area, ascent is hosting the Montreal launch of The Glass Seed at the rad’a space below our offices on Monday, November 19th at 7pm. All the details are below - we hope to see you there!

Montreal launch of The Glass Seed

at rad’a: 841 Gilford (at St-Andre)

November 19th, 7-10 pm **free admission**

Join us for a night of storytelling & community. Readings by Eileen Delehanty Pearkes and Vikki Stark (author of My Sister, My Self, which has been shortlisted for this year’s Mavis Gallant Prize for Non-fiction). Musical interludes by Jane Gabriels. The readings will be followed by a discussion on spirituality, feminism & healing . This event is not to be missed!

About The Glass Seed:

The Glass Seed takes a feminist slant on our cultural beliefs about caring work and the complexities of sustaining compassion while caring for a dying parent. It’s very much grounded in Pearkes’ experience of being a woman who’s working through conflicting ideas about femininity and feminism. Her thoughts are insightful, and her research is impeccable. The book has been called exquisite, lucid and thoughtful.

When Pearkes first realizes that her mother has Alzheimer’s disease, she begins to consider what it means to be a mother, a daughter and a woman. During a winter spent in quiet reflection, she gathers historical, religious and mythic perspectives on beauty and womanhood which feed her contemplation of her own mother-daughter relationship.

Lyrical and intimate, Pearkes’ voice resonates with the seasons as she takes us on a journey through winter to spring, from disintegration to wholeness. The evocative language of The Glass Seed reveals the influence of yoga, and an intensely personal approach to the politics of womanhood, from this emerging writer in the literary tradition of women’s spiritual memoir.

is “old” yoga “new” again?

November 4th, 2007 by roseanne Posted in yoga in the media

A recent article in the Globe and Mail takes a look at the newest yoga “trend”: Sanskrit. According to the article, there is an increased interest in courses which explore the spiritual and philosophic roots of yoga. I found the article interesting because on one hand, the writer acknowledges that perhaps people are drawn to studying Sanskrit because they may be seeking more than the physical practice. Yet the tone of the piece is also slightly dismissive, as though this is simply the latest “yogic fad,” along with naked yoga and laughing yoga.

yoga is here to stay, says cbc.ca

Of course, we at ascent have known this all along. A couple of days ago, cbc.ca ran an article about the cultural phenomenon of yoga. The article provides a general introduction for the neophyte who may be wondering what all this yoga stuff is about and where did its spiritual roots originate. Although the article ran in the Exercise and Fitness section of the CBC website, the writer does a pretty good job of exploring the mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of the practice. As the article notes, yoga is becoming part of the general consciousness — and with mainstream media coverage such as this, we can certainly expect to see awareness of yoga increase in coming years.

time magazine explores ‘when yoga hurts’

October 9th, 2007 by roseanne Posted in yoga in the media

The latest issue of Time Magazine includes an article about the recent increase of yoga injuries in the United States. The article has already garnered attention from a number of yoga blogs, and is the most popular article on the Time website this week.

“Bad-mouthing yoga seems like begging for a hit of unfavorable karma. But with more than 14 million people practicing yoga or tai chi nationwide, up 136% since 2000, orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists and chiropractors across the country are dealing with the increasing fallout from yoga gone awry. Over the past three years, 13,000 Americans were treated in an emergency room or a doctor’s office for yoga-related injuries, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.”

- from the article (and while you’re there, check out the ‘Related Articles’ - fascinating reading for anyone interested in yoga in the mainstream media)

I think the short article does a very good job of opening up the reasons behind why so many people get injured while practising yoga. The writer acknowledges that the increased injuries most likely have to do with people’s misperception of the practice, as well as inadequately trained teachers.

Last week, CNN aired a fascinating interview with the legendary B.K.S. Iyengar. In this well-done and intelligent 3-part interview, the internationally-known teacher had much to say about the role of yoga in his life, his contribution to yoga in the West, and the commercialization of yoga.

*Please note, you will need version 9 of Adobe Flash Player - when you click through to the CNN website, there are simple instructions for downloading the player. As well, a transcript of the interview is also on the website.

Thanks to e-Sutra for the heads up about this interview.
